Hello!!! I had planned on posting last nigh, but after my lack of sleep the night before, I spent the hours after dinner laying on the couch watching the Craigslist Killer Movie like a zombie. Did anyone else watch it? What did you think? Here are my thoughts:
- I found a few inconsistencies between the movie and reality. Living in Boston, I followed the story pretty closely so the inconsistencies were obvious. For example: he did not die by suffocation, but by hanging himself. He was in jail for a few months before he committed suicide. He didn’t try to hang himself upon arrest.
- I wish the movie when more into WHY they think he did this. The movie touched on the fact that his childhood may not have been great, but I feel like I wanted to know more about his psyche and motive. This could be because he commuted suicide before they fully understood the why. There was a documentary on after that I didn’t stay up to watch, but DVRed maybe there are some answers in that?
- At first I thought the fiancee was kind of dumb for not knowing, but by the end I really did feel awful for her. That must have been devastating.
Ok on to a cheerier subject
I have been really thinking about my New Year’s Resolutions for the past few days, trying to figure out what I wanted them to be. Some people think they are dumb, but I love them. I live for goal setting and new beginnings! I am the kind of person that feels so hopeful with a new beginning and I cannot function unless I am working toward a goal. A goal can be as small as finishing some filing at work, training for a race or working towards a bigger goal like living a happier life.
So this year I have set forth a few goals in three different areas health, professional and personal. Here they are:
Health:
- Run 10 races- I am super excited about this one and am already registered for 2
- Run 2 Half Marathons – I am already registered for one in April and one in May.
- Focus on becoming stronger- This should translate into 2-3 strength workouts a week.
- Take a multivitamin once a day
- Work on Oral Health- I know I have written about my fear of the dentist and how I have not gone to see him in a few years. This year I am going to see him twice (my insurance pays for it so why not?), brush twice a day and Listerine at least once a day.
- Cut back on drinking- Not to say that it is an issue by any means, but sometimes I may indulge in beer and wine a little too much.
- Stretch after every run for a decent amount of time.
Professional:
- Do well in my classes- I know school may not fall into the “professional” category for most, but since my M.Ed with advance me very much professionally it does for me.
- Get an Internship for Fall
- Work on writing- Since I do write part-time I would life to focus on improving my writing skills and creativity surrounding my writing. That includes my blog and my freelance stuff.
- SECRET- I have a secret goal that I am not ready to share with anyone. It is an idea that has been sitting in the back of my mind and in the back of my Mac for sometime now.
Personal:
- Find more healthy meals for Adam and I to cook at home- It is not a secret that Adam is a picky eater and sometimes finding meals that we both like that are healthy is hard for us. I really hope I can find more things we can both enjoy.
- Get my house re-done- If you have been reading my blog for any length of time you might be aware that Adam and I a re-doing our house. I am sure there will be a lot of things I need to do and decisions I need to make. I am hoping to get all of these things done in a timely manner and create the place that will be our home for the rest of our lives. (!!!!!!)
- Find More Time for Myself
- Work on my relationships- I consider myself to be a great friend, wife, granddaughter, daughter and dog mom, but there is always room for improvement.
- Enjoy the weekdays- I get into a rut of work, workout, shower, eat, tv, bed over and over on workdays. I also spend my lunch running errands, or sitting in the lounge eating my lunch starring at the wall. I am hoping to find ways to make my workday evenings or lunch breaks more fun this year.
- Stay on top of the laundry- Laundry is seriously stressful for Adam and I for some reason. My goal is to find a way to eliminate that stress, which is probably just doing it more often.
Seem like a lot? It is! I really want to aim high! All of these goals have clear steps to me and are all things that I think will make me a healthier and happier version of myself this time next year. What are some of your New Year’s Resolutions?
Ok, now to my eats!!!
Lunch was leftovers from the night before which were packed in this adorable lunch bag that my parents got me for Christmas
Leftover tofu and brown rice with marinara sauce, roasted brussle sprouts.
On the side I had a clementine, adora disk and my multivitamin (Hello, New Year’s Resolution! ).
After lunch, I got a little sleepy and needed a pick me up since I was running on 4 hours of sleep. I got a grande skinny vanilla latte while running an errand at the bank. Adam gave me a gift card in my stocking
After work I headed to my part-time job to get some work done there. I was particularly busy because of the end of one year and beginning of another, but I powdered through.
I got home to a cooking husband. Don’t you love that?
Oh and a nosy pup…Oscar gets all up in our business when he knows cooking is going on.
Adam made reduced fat cheddar stuffed turkey burgers with sweet potato fries while I made us salads.
I ate the turkey burger on a whole wheat sandwich thin and topped it with mustard
The salad included romaine, tomatoes, red bell peppers, cucumber and goddess dressing.
Since we had a tiny bit of leftover ground turkey breast, we mad Oscar an Oscar sized burger. It was about the size of my lens cap.
Dessert was a small piece of Lindt Sea Salt Dark Chocolate (aka chocolate crack).
This morning I got up feeling so much more rested! I didn’t get a full 8 hours, but I felt a zillion times better than when I only got four hours!!!
Breakfast was a whole wheat bagel topped with laughing cow and a tomato slice and coffee. I was really craving an egg sandwich, but had no time to actually make it.
Today’s Outfit:
Dark bootcut jeans (Gap), White cami (H&M), Black asymmetrical cardigan (Forever 21), Scarf (H&M).
Scarf:
Shoes:
Black Tory Burch flats (A Christmas gift from my mom and dad)
I hope you all have a great day, see you soon!

Looks like you have a good start on the healthy eats!
This is a great list of goals for the new year—I think it’s a great idea to aim high!
I haven’t specified my resolutions yet…I need to set some goals, and I’m trying to read through others’ resolution/goal posts to get my own inspiration!
I just found your blog and look forward to reading more!
~Lisa
I thought they found him in his cell with a bag over his head/limbs having bled out? Iunno, the whole idea of this guy is just so creepy to me. =/
BTW – I love your scarves…I need to start wearing mine again.
Thats what I thought I heard too…hmm either way, I agree, CREEPY!
I heard the exact same thing. He got put into solitary because he tried hanging himself… then did the plastic bag thing and bled out…. I didn’t watch the movie, I’d like to though!
love all the 2011 goals . . . and wishing you the best this year
Go Adam! My boyfriend never cooks and wouldn’t ever be able to come up with something as creative as that dish! Impressive!
Phillip Markoff did suffocate himself and slice his wrists. He wrote Meghan and Pocket on the wall of his cell (they called eachother Pocket for some reason). Creepster! I felt bad for her too… can you imagine NOT knowing! Double lives.. YIKES! And how about Quin-SEE? Uh no, it’s Quin-ZEE. And all of the cops had NY accents?! I watched the show after but I’m still confused as to why he did what he did but they explained his suicide. Check it out! Can’t wait for the Amanda Knox story in February!
Thanks! I am excited to check it out ( does that make me creep?). I can’t wait for the Amanda Knox story!
Absolutely NOT a creep! It is so fascinating to find out why people do what they do…especially sociopaths!
I need to work on my list! But definitely finding a new job and being a better friend.
i’m pretty sure he died of suffocation. he cut some major vein in his body and put a plastic bag over his head and put the covers over himself so no one noticed. so creepy. you need to watch the documentary after, they interviewed another one of his victims and some of his high school and college friends. i followed the case pretty closely since it was in Boston, too. Bizarre… I’d love to know more of the “why”, too! I think the fiance needs to do an interview… such a twisted story!
staying on top of laundry is a reallyyyy good goal. i have a washer and dryer in my unit and for some reason its STILL hard to do it in a timely manner!
Happy New Year!
Chels
I’m running the Run to Remember in May too! Maybe a meetup?
My big resolution is getting into better shape and cooking more meals at home. I also want to get better at saving money.
Yes!!! Let’s meet up!
I only caught snippets of the movie last night, but consider myself a Philip Markoff expert (half way joking), and believe that Beth is correct in the suffocation, slit wrists and writing on the cell wall. He also attempted suicide prior to this, although I’m not sure if it was so soon after arrest, and was on suicide watch. I think that MA state prisons have the highest inmate suicide rate in the country. There’s a Phoenix reporter who has been doing some really great stories on this recently. As to the WHY, I just think that we’ll never really get a sufficient answer. I think that for anyone to kill another person you have to be a highly damaged individual, whether that is due to nature or nurture, I’m not sure. I do wonder though whether it was a split second panic decision, or if he had planned on killing Brisman. I tend to lean towards the former.
Your resolutions are incredibly well thought out and sound great! Mine was to take better care of myself and get Kanye West to marry me. No big deal. Also, yesterday I told myself that I was going to sign up for a 5k…I’m still debating this…
Great resolutions! I love New Year’s and setting new goals for myself. I have atleast 10 goals for this year. Lots of running is one of them.
I finally got some of that chocolate in my stocking for Christmas! YUM!
Just a little more inspiration for you to go to the dentist – my mom did not go for years (like 10+ years) and she says consistently that it was one of her biggest mistakes ever. Once she went back, it was so hard to get her teeth and gums back into healthy shape…so just do it! One of my goals is to floss daily…
I get really stressed out by laundry too. I’m staring at a pile of it right now and stressin’. Definitely a NYR for me as well!
Love the camera strap!
Great resolutions! I totally understand what you mean by making the work week more enjoyable. I’m going to try and do so by organizing “lunch dates” during my weekdays so I have time to catch up with friends between classes and work at the university.
As for my resolutions, I picked an over all theme of “getting out there” and hope to do so by: Taking a class, joining a group or club (I really want to join a book club this year!), and doing a 100km bike ride to raise money for a charity. I also (and this may seem odd) want to spend more money, I think I need to spoil myself a little more, as I tend to save, save, save to the point where my earning give me little enjoyment.
All the best in 2011!
You have so many resolutions for 2011! I enjoyed reading them because some of them are exact things I have been wanting to do. Seeing the dentist being one of them! Enjoying weeknights being another. My two resolutions for the year are to learn how to make something (through pottery/crocheting/anything crafty) and to drink more water.
Love love the lunch bag and your resolutions sound great. Girl get to the dentist. You want to fix any issues sooner cause they will be less $ and hurt less. Also dentists are always accepting patients so If you don’t like the one you go to…at your next cleaning (most insurances cover 2 cleanings a year so every 6 months) switch dentists until you find the one you love. And if you switch they will send all your xrays to your new one. Don’t settle! Mine is 40 min away but I love him and the office staff is so nice and I’ve never had a problem.
My resolutions are:
1. learn to cook. My fiance is the only one that does and I need to learn so i can help out. Its gonna be interesting at first since I’ve never cooked!
2. Really stay committed to working out.
I hate that we don’t have H&M here. Annnnd my favorite H&M headband broke today which just sucks but now I have a reason to look online for headbands and scarves!
I watched the movie as well but apparently I am out of the loop b/c I didnt even know he killed himself. I love true crime and all that stuff and wish they would have gone further into the why’s of his behavior as well.
